Can someone with a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering work on Fuel Cell cars?

Would they be a able to contribute to the design of
Fuel efficient engines for large automobile manufacturers?
Maybe not so much the chemistry aspect of it but the
design of hydrogen fuel cells and the other crucial systems involved in
a car such as the FCX etc.

Because I know a mechanical engineer would work on the more tangible parts of a car
but what about combustion, hydrogen fuels, and electric generators etc.
Would they need a degree in chemistry? or nuclear engineering
in order to work on the actual subject of fuel efficiency?

Development work on engines usually done through the devoted and coordinated work of a team with different disciplines to cover all relevant aspects. Mechanical Engineering is the backbone.
