automatic trans in Electric Car?

why can't you use an automatic transmission in the Electric Car Conversion kits

The only reason that I could think of is that the transmission is shifted by vacuum from the engine, and an electric motor does not create a vacuum, how ever you should be able the shift it manually, but you would have to tighten the salvo to not down shift.
