Why don't car manufacturers make a Diesel/Electric Hybrid?
If the toyota prius can be so efficient with a gasoline/electric hybrid engine, a diesel power plant combined with electric would move it into the next level of efficiency!
maybe over the ellusive 100mpg.....
Some manufacturers are trying. However, most diesels can't pass current US emissions tests because they have relatively high levels of emissions of things like particulates. Clean diesel technology is resolving this problem, but it also makes diesels more expensive and less fuel efficient.

Peugeot and Citroën are shooting for production of diesel-electric hybrids by 2011. However, the Peugeot Prologue is claimed to get 52.3 mpg and 109 g/km CO2 emissions. Compare that to the 2nd generation Prius, which gets 46.5 mpg and 104 g/km CO2 emissions. In other words, the Prologue in 2-3 years will meet the standards of today's Prius.

Another example, VW was going to make a diesel-hybrid Golf, but scrapped the program because it was too expensive.

Really I think the main reason is that by the time they solve the issues with diesel-electric hybrids, automakers could be selling plug-in gas-electric hybrids and even fully Electric Cars, which are more efficient. So there's not much point in pursuing diesel-electric hybrid technology because in the end cars will just be fully electric anyway.
