Why can't we purchase an all Electric Car at a reasonable price?

Electric Vehicles would solve many of the problems that plague us today, including green house gases, acid rain and wars over oil. I am aware that electric vehicles also contribute to these things, but to a much lesser extent than fossil fuel based vehicles. I think that it has something to do with the stranglehold that oil companies have on the EV market.

Without trying to pander David, both your assessment and your wording suggests you have a good approach for the subject. I would be surprised if you did not also have conclusions regarding the cost as well.

Electric vehicles are a very old technology that had their start after steam and before gasoline vehicles. We already live with many types of electric vehicles in the form of our subways and some trains. We are also moved around by elevators, escalators, moving ramps, segways, golf carts, and now the tesla roadster. These are all electric. What is new technology is the attempt to get more performance of battery vehicles.

Electric dragsters now approach gasoline vehicle performance. The Tesla Roadster is by any standard a neat package. But as with any new technology these come at a premium price. This is because the innovation that brings the price down will almost always come after it is introduced. We have seen the same pattern with all of our electronics. Larger volumes will also bring in economies of scale.

But oil companies have also had an over 100 year history of obstructing competition. I might count 5 or 10 highlights of this sad history but that is for another question. This not only includes electric vehicles, but bio fuels and they have enjoyed a near monopoly over our personal transportation. They are rich and powerful and who of us in their position might not be inclined to want to stay that way.

So how this drama will unfold is the story of our times. I would like to think it will not be a tragedy, but history is not very reassuring.
