1949 Desoto sedan question?

I just traded my motorcycle for a 1949 Desoto,its a gem but I cant figure out which pedals do what or how the shifter works.I got it running but the brakes are out and I dont want to get it rolling and not be able to stop her.If there is anyone with experience with this car or any similar cars please let me know,I have alot of other questions.Thanks
its got a straight six with the fluid drive tranny.

You didn't give much info. Is it auto or standard? If it's standard, its probably a 3 speed with the shifter on the steering column. From center position, pull towards you and down is 1st. Up, away from you, and up some more is 2nd. Down and away from 2nd is 3rd. just like a floor shifter only mounted on the column.
3 on the tree is what they used to be called.

Pedal position is the same as a modern car.
