Hybrid Car Articles

Don't you wish that hybrids would stop trying to be a 'fashion statement' and look like a normal car?
According to a 2004 Washington Post article, the Prius and other Hybrid Cars are often seen as fashion statements by their owners.
People want others to *know* that they're driving a hybrid - saving the earth and looking d*mn trendy while doing it.
Uhm, I might be mistaken...but why should saving the earth be a fashion statement??
Instead of making hybrids look trendy and hip, shouldn't they look like just another car - not everyone wants to buy something so odd looking.
It's the hybrid technology that is the important thing, NOT that it looks cool or because it's endorsed by celebrities.
Looking good to your neighbors should not be a motivation for saving our planet...nor should it even be something to brag about...and if that's what you do, then you've got the wrong idea.

With the exception of the Toyota Prius, and the Honda Insight (now discontinued), which were both built from the ground up as hybrids and therefore have distinctive aerodynamic styling, all of the available hybrids on the market look just like their conventional counterparts, except for some badging. They do not stick out.
In the US, there are several hybrid vehicles to choose from, in various size and performance categories. MSRP is listed for the US models. No real order...

Hybrid Synergy Drive $60.54 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) is a set of hybrid car technologies developed by Toyota and used in the companys Prius, Highlander Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, Lexus RX 400h/RX 450h, Lexus GS 450h, Lexus LS 600h/LS 600hL, and Lexus HS 250h automobiles. It is also used in the Nissan Altima Hybrid. HSD technology produces a full hybrid vehicle and allows the car to perform on the electric motor only as opposed to most other brand hybrids which cannot and are considered mild hybrids; it also combines an electric drive and a planetary gearset which performs similarly to a continuously variable transmission. The Synergy Drive is a drivebywire system with no direct mechanical connection between the engine and the engine controls: both the gas pedal/accelerator and the gearshift lever in an HSD car merely send electrical signals to a control computer. Hybrid Automaton $92.4 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A hybrid automaton (plural: hybrid automata or hybrid automatons) is a mathematical model for precisely describing systems where computational processes interact with physical processes. Its behavior consists of discrete state transitions and continuous evolution.A simple example is a roomthermostatheater system where the temperature of the room evolves according to laws of thermodynamics and the state of the heater (on/off); the thermostat senses the temperature, performs certain computations and turns the heater on and off. In general, hybrid automata have been used to model and analyze a variety of embedded systems including vehicle control systems, air traffic control systems, mobile robots, and processes from systems biology. Hybrid System $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A hybrid system is a dynamic system that exhibits both continuous and discrete dynamic behavior a system that can both flow (described by a differential equation) and jump (described by a difference equation or control graph). Often, the term hybrid dynamic system is used, to distinguish over hybrid systems such as those that combine neural nets and fuzzy logic, or electrical and mechanical drivelines. A hybrid system has the benefit of encompassing a larger class of systems within its structure, allowing for more flexibility in modelling dynamic phenomena. In general, the state of a hybrid system is defined by the values of the continuous variables and a discrete control mode. The state changes either continuously, according to a flow condition, or discretely according to a control graph. Continuous flow is permitted as long as socalled invariants hold, while discrete transitions can occur as soon as given jump conditions are satisfied. Discrete transition may be associated with events. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. WolfDog Hybrid $81.25 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A wolfdog hybrid (also called a wolf hybrid or wolfdog) is a canid hybrid resulting from the mating of a wolf (various Canis lupus subspecies) and a dog (Canis lupus familiaris). The term wolfdog is preferred by most wolfdog proponents and breeders since the domestic dog was recently taxonomically recategorized as a subspecies of wolf. The American Veterinary Medical Association and the United States Department of Agriculture refer to them as wolfdog hybrids. Rescue organizations consider any dog with wolf heritage within the last five generations to be a wolfdog, including some established wolfdog breeds. Hybrid Course $71.7 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Hybrid courses blend facetoface interaction such as inclass discussions, active group work, and live lectures with typically webbased educational technologies such as online course cartridges, assignments, discussion boards, and other webassisted learning tools. The degree to which the design of hybrid courses utilize traditional classroom and online learning environments varies, being largely dependent on the subject matter and overall nature of a course. Regardless of design, such courses may be expected to deliver instruction in both an asynchronous and synchronous manner, and are becoming increasingly prevalent in todays society. Important to note is that the term hybrid is not used often in the U.S., where the more common term for this kind of education is Blended learning. Hybrid Computer $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Hybrid computers are computers that exhibit features of analog computers and digital computers. The digital component normally serves as the controller and provides logical operations, while the analog component normally serves as a solver of differential equations. In general, analog computers are extraordinarily fast, since they can solve most complex equations at the rate at which a signal traverses the circuit, which is generally an appreciable fraction of the speed of light. On the other hand, the precision of analog computers is not good; they are limited to three, or at most, four digits of precision. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request $68.51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Hybrid automatic repeat request (Hybrid ARQ or HARQ) is a combination of forward errorcorrecting coding and error detection using the ARQ errorcontrol method. In standard ARQ, redundant bits are added to data to be transmitted using an errordetecting code such as cyclic redundancy check (CRC). In Hybrid ARQ, forward error correction (FEC) bits are added to the existing Error Detection (ED) bits (such as ReedSolomon code, Convolutional code or Turbo code) to correct a subset of all errors while relying on ARQ to detect uncorrectable errors. As a result Hybrid ARQ performs better than ordinary ARQ in poor signal conditions, but in its simplest form this comes at the expense of significantly lower throughput in good signal conditions. There is typically a signal quality crossover point below which simple Hybrid ARQ is better, and above which basic ARQ is better. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Radiation Reduced Hybrid $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Radiation reduced hybrid is procedure for discovering the location of genetic markers relative to one another. The relative location of these markers can be combined into a physical map or a genetic map. The radiation hybrid technique begins as another way to amplify and purify DNA, the first step in any sequencing project; radiation is used to break the DNA into pieces and these pieces are incorporated into the hybrid cell; the hybrid can be grown in large quantities. One can then check for the presence of various genetic markers using PCR and linkage analysis to resolve the distance between the markers. That is, if two genetic markers are near each other, they are less likely to be separated by the DNAbreaking radiation. The technique is similar to traditional linkage analysis, where we depend on genetic recombination to calculate the distance between two genetic markers. Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit $84.44 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit (BHS) is a modern linguistic category applied to the language used in a class of Indian Buddhist texts, such as the Perfection of Wisdom sutras. BHS is classified as a Middle Indic language. It is sometimes called Buddhist Sanskrit or Mixed Sanskrit. In many places where BHS differs from Sanskrit it is closer to, or identical with, Pli. However, most extant BHS works were originally written in BHS, rather than being reworkings or translations of already existing works in Pli or other languages. However, earlier works, mostly from the Mahsghika school, use a form of mixed Sanskrit in which the original Prakrit has been incompletely Sanskritised, with the phonetic forms being changed to the Sanskrit versions, but the grammar of Prakrit being retained. For instance, Prakrit bhikkhussa, the possessive singular of bhikkhu (monk, cognate with Sanskrit bhiku) is converted not to bhiko as in Sanskrit but mechanically changed to bhikusya.
