What is the reasoning behind hydrogen cars?

It seems like every auto company is designing hydrogen fuel cells cars and marketing them like some gift to the environment. What I don't get is why a hydrogen car is any better then a simply battery-charged Electric Vehicle.
Don't they make the hydrogen using electricity? Doesn't doesn't the fuel cell just convert the hydrogen back into electricity to power a motor?
Why not cut out the hydrogen all together and have batteries? What am I missing? I understand that fuel cells would be faster to refuel, but hydrogen would is also volatile, expensive and there is no infrastructure for it. My thermodynamics sense also tells me that storing the electricity as hydrogen wastes a lot of energy.

In theory yes you are correct.

In practice one of the important aspect of hydrogen cars is that they can be REFILLED in 5 minutes (vs. HOURS for battery cars). Also hydrogen can be created in area where clean energy are plenty (Arizon, etc.) and then just transported. But with electricity, there's some loss to transporting high energy long distance.

And another thing about hydrogen is that they can be PRE-MADE and stored.
